But what did winemakers use back then, when sugar wasn’t available? Sugar already existed in India at the time, but it didn’t appear in Europe in commercial quantities until 1843, when it began to be produced in the Czech Republic — and from then on, it firmly entered our daily lives. However, Volodymyr needed his drink long before that, and honey turned out to be the perfect substitute. It was honey that served as the main ingredient in Vyshnyak for more than 800 years.
